The "Persuaders" video that we started watching in class was a film done by Frontline on the impact of advertising on consumers. It begins by discusses how we as consumers are constantly surrounded by multiple forms of advertising all day. From TV commercials, to magazine and newspaper ads, to sponsors in sports, to ads on buses and billboards and even to labels and stickers put up on the street, everywhere we go we see advertisements. There are multiple way that advertisers look to reach their public and through many different appeals. By advertising in multiple ways they hope to reach the greatest public. It then gives one example of an emotional appeal that a new airline, Song, as well as Saturn attempted to use when advertising themselves. These emotional appeals make users loyal to their brands on a different level.
The movie also talked about a form of guerilla marketing performed by Adidas on the side of a building in New York. The team projected their image, at night, on the building hoping to reach the night crowd in times square instead of their everyday demographic. Forms of marketing like this step out of the box and reach the public in a different way, leaving a stronger memory in their mind.
Overall I found this movie to be interesting. It shows many ads that I have seen and found successful, it showed how advertising works and attempts to achieve its goals and it even showed the multiple places advertising occurs that we do not even realize (like in movies and tv shows). I think the film did a great job of showing how we as consumers and constantly surround by the markets multiple, and ever growing forms, of advertising. The movie also discussed ways in which advertising is being hurt by technology (such as Tivo) and how companies will have to learn to work around that. There is no doubt in my mind that advertising is evolving just as fast as we our as individuals. With ever\y step we take so does advertising. It will always be there in its multiple forms attempting to perused us about something.
